A-Rod already at it again
Spring training hasn't even begun, and already the Alex Rodriguez circus is in full swing.
The New York Yankees megastar has been all over the news in the last few days, releasing a children's book, getting in the middle of an incident at a book signing that ended with police intervening and now refusing to quell speculation that he will exercise his option after this season to back out of the last years of his Yankees contract and become a free agent.
So, the storm has already started and A-Rod hasn't even stepped in the batting cage yet, left a runner on third in a key spot or picked up a grounder and chucked it into the stands.
This guy is one of the most talented players you will ever see, and probably one of its most complex people. It's always something with Rodriguez, whether he is talking publicly about undergoing therapy, writing children's books, taking his shirt off in Central Park or disappearing in the clutch he is always at the center of something that doesn't help his team win.
Good friend of the blog and golfing buddy Bryan compares A-Rod to Terrell Owens, the NFL's perennial poster boy for 'look-at-me' immature behavior. Owens is a constant distraction and divisive force in the locker room on any team he plays for.
I can't go that far. Owens is just an immature jerk who can't stand not having the spotlight. He will deliberately do whatever it takes, no matter how outlandish, to make sure he gets face time on TV or headlines in the papers.
A-Rod seems like a nice enough guy who simply doesn't get it. Yankee fans don't want to hear about his therapy sessions, we don't want to hear his phony assertions that he and Derek Jeter are best buddies, we don't to hear about how hard he works.
Yankee fans just want to see the man hit, especially when it counts, and lead the Yankees to a 27th World Series title.
I don't know if A-Rod is staying or going at the end of this season, and right now I am not sure which I would prefer to see. I just know I wish the circus would shut down for a while.
