Jeter: I want to be The Boss

Derek Jeter wants to be The Boss.

Nah, the New York Yankees star shortstop doesn't want Manager Joe Torre's job. He wants to be The Big Boss. He wants George Steinbrenner's job.

"I would like to own a team," Jeter told New York's 1050 ESPN Radio Tuesday. "That would be kind of cool to get an opportunity to call some of the shots." "I will do it one day."

Could Jeter someday actually someday own the Yankees? Don't hold your breath waiting for that to happen.

First off, Jeter is only 33 and is likely to play for several more years. Second, of course, is the small matter of ponying up the cash.
"Do you know how much money that (buying the Yankees) costs?" Jeter said. "That is a lot of money, baby."

So, let's play along. What kind of owner would Jeter be, anyway?

We know Jeter buys into Steinbrenner's philosophy of 'win a World Series or the season is a failure.' So, we know he wouldn't just be in it for the joy of ownership. He'd be in to win.

That, of course, means he would likely be willing to spend money. He has, after all, been raised on the Steinbrenner method. Meaning that you put your money where your mouth is. You don't just hope to win, you use all your resources to give yourself the best chance to win.

We know Jeter loves Joe Torre, the only major legaue manager he has ever played for. If Torre is still around, Jeter would probably hire him to manage. Memo to relief pitchers: At his advanced age, frequently being wheeled to the pitcher's mound will be required to keep him awake. Thus, relievers will have to learn to throw with both hands so they can be available every day.

We know Jeter "would like the opportunity to call the shots." So, he is likely to more or less act as his own general manager. Maybe he could hire Suzyn Waldman and at least give her the title of GM. She could then go around all day saying "Oh my goodness gracious, what a wonderful idea Mr. Jeter."

All kidding aside, Jeter is probably serious about his desire to own a team. He's never been one to say anything just for the attention.

The thing Jeter does best is win. If he buys a team one day, my guess is that won't change.
