Disabled List All-Star teams
Miguel Tejada went on the disabled list Friday with a broken wrist. Curt Schilling and Randy Johnson also recently were disabled. All these big names landing on the DL got me thinking that you could probably make two pretty darn good teams out of all the guys currently injured.
So, I thought I'd try. Here are my Disabled List All-Star teams. Whenever possible, I am going to favor guys who will be out for a while over those who are soon coming off the DL. Let's see how close I can get to filling out two full, quality teams.
American League
Starting Pitchers -- Curt Schilling, Francisco Liriano, Kris Benson, Carl Pavano, Matt Clement
Relief Pitchers -- B.J. Ryan, Huston Street, Joel Zumaya, Arthur Rhodes, Danys Baez, Justin Duscherer.
Catcher -- Mike Piazza
First Base -- Mark Teixeira, Jason Giambi, Lyle Overbay
Second Base -- B.J. Upton, Mark Grudzielanek
Shortstop -- Miguel Tejada
Third Base -- Hank Blalock, Joe Crede
Outfield -- Juan Rivera, Rocco Baldelli, Garret Anderson, Reggie Sanders, Reed Johnson.
National League
Starting Pitchers -- Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, Chris Carpenter, Jason Schmidt, Mark, Mulder.
Relief Pitchers -- Brad Lidge, Kerry Wood, Duaner Sanchez, Tom Gordon, Brett Myers, Salomon Torres, Mike Gonzalez.
Catcher -- Yadier Molina
First Base -- Nick Johnson, Rich Aurelia
Second Base -- Ryan Freel
Shortstop -- David Eckstein, Adam Everett
Third Base -- Corey Koskie
Outfield -- Jim Edmonds, Preston Wilson, Jason Repko, Jeff DaVanon, Moises Alou, Endy Chavez.
Those two teams have some holes, but I'd guess both could compete for playoff spots in their respective leagues.
I'm not sure what this exercise proves, but it does make me wonder. Despite all the training and conditioning of today's athletes, do these guys actually get hurt more than players did 20-30 years ago?
Or, with all the money involved, do these players get coddled more and protected when they have minor injuries? Particularly in the case of pitchers.
I don't have the answer to that, but it's an interesting question.
Your thoughts?
